Reducing ULD weight requires attention to every component—from structural panels to the hinges that connect them.
AVULD integrates an aluminum structural framework with graphene-oxide-coated carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer panels, which we refer to as GCFRP. This approach builds on CFRP’s established use in aerospace while incorporating our material and folding-design concepts.
For the folding connections, AVULD uses Kevlar flexible hinges in place of conventional metal hinges. The design aims to reduce hinge weight while using the aramid fibers’ high tensile strength to support the connection between panels.
The attached photograph shows a folding panel sample with the yellow Kevlar hinge running along its edge. This flexible connection allows adjacent panels to fold without a conventional metal hinge assembly.
Each material has a distinct role: the aluminum framework provides structural support, the composite panels form the lightweight enclosure, and the Kevlar hinges enable folding.
Our goal is a lighter, collapsible ULD that reduces empty-container weight and the space required for storage and return transport. The complete assembly’s strength, bond durability and repeated-folding performance must be established through testing.
